Wendy Whelan, widely considered one of the world’s leading dancers of her generation, began dance lessons at the age of three in her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. Whelan began intense professional training at the Louisville Ballet Academy. She was accepted to the summer program of the School of American Ballet at age 14; a year later, she moved to New York to continue her studies there full-time. In 1984, she was named an apprentice with New York City Ballet and joined the corps de ballet a year later.

Wendy Whelan went on to spend 30 years at New York City Ballet, dancing virtually all the major roles. She was promoted to Soloist in 1989 and to Principal dancer in 1991. 

Ms. Whelan has been a guest artist all over the world. She received the Dance Magazine Award in 2007, and in 2009 was given a Doctorate of Arts, honoris causa, from Bellarmine University. In 2011, she received both The Jerome Robbins Award and a Bessie Award for her Sustained Achievement in Performance.Since 2013, she has been developing and touring her own independent projects. Her inaugural project, Restless Creature broke down boundaries between interdisciplinary dance forms. She remains committed in her work to opening up creative conversations and developing unexpected collaborations through dance.

In February 2019, Ms. Whelan marked a return to New York City Ballet when she was appointed Associate Artistic Director of the Company.

Unity Phelan was born in Princeton, New Jersey and began her dance training at the age of five at the Princeton Ballet School, where her teachers included Douglas Martin, Maria Youskevitch, and Mary Barton.

During the summers of 2008 and 2009, Ms. Phelan attended the summer sessions at the School of American Ballet, the official school of New York City Ballet, and enrolled as a full-time student in fall of 2009.

She became an apprentice with NYCB in December 2012 and joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet in November 2013.

In February 2017, Ms. Phelan was promoted to soloist.

Megan Fairchild is a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and began her dance training at the age of four, at Dance Concepts in Sandy, Utah, and at the Ballet West Conservatory in Salt Lake City. She moved to New York City to train at the School of American Ballet, the official school of the New York City Ballet, in 2000, and was hired as an apprentice with NYCB the following year. Ms. Fairchild was promoted to the rank of soloist in 2004, and to principal in 2005.

Ms. Fairchild’s expansive repertoire with New York City Ballet includes principal roles in classical full-length ballets such as Swan Lake, Coppelia, Sleeping Beauty and La Sylphide, as well as principal roles in ballets choreographed by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Peter Martins, and Alexei Ratmansky. She was featured as the Sugar Plum Fairy in the 2011 telecast of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker streamed in movie theaters worldwide.

In 2014 she made her Broadway debut as Miss Turnstiles in the revival of On the Town, for which she was nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award and received a Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway debut.

In addition to performing full time with the New York City Ballet, Ms. Fairchild is currently a teaching fellow with the School of American Ballet.

Introducing New Teaching Artist: Ashley Laracey, Soloist Ballerina with the New York City Ballet

Ashley Laracey was born in Sarasota, Florida. She began her dance training at the age of five with Cheryl Carty and Christine White at the Carty Academy of Theater Dance in Bradenton, Florida. At age 12, she began training with Pavel Fomin, Diane Partington, and Isabel and Javier Dubrocq at Sarasota Ballet of Florida. She continued her studies at age 15 with Victoria Schneider, Olivier Pardina, and Svetlana Osiyeva at the Harid Conservatory in Boca Raton, Florida.

Ms. Laracey entered the School of American Ballet (SAB), the official school of New York City Ballet, in the fall of 2001. In October 2002, Ms. Laracey became an apprentice with New York City Ballet, and in February 2003 she joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet and was promoted to soloist in February 2013.

Ms. Laracey has danced many featured roles in George Balanchine, Peter Martins, Jeorme Robbins, Troy Schumacher, Justin Peck and Christopher Wheeldon.

Ms. Laracey is on the board of Balletcollective, an arts collective, and also teaches movement therapy to children and young adults with disabilities, specifically Cerebral Palsy.

BIO

Born in Paris France, Indiana Woodward’s earliest memories are of watching ballet class and being backstage in the theater. After moving to Los Angeles, Indiana began training with Yuri Grigoriev and it was from that moment that she knew that this was going to be her lifelong passion and career.

Indiana began studying at the School of American Ballet in the summer of 2010 and joined the school as a full time student in the fall of 2010. In August 2012 Ms. Woodward became an apprentice with New York City Ballet and a full member of the company in December of the same year. Indiana was promoted to soloist in February 2017.

Ms. Woodward is a recipient of the 2016 Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Award and 2016 Clive Barnes Foundation Award. In 2010, she won first place in the Bolshoi Ballet Academy Summer Intensive in New York City and was invited to perform at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy gala in Moscow.

Introducing New Teaching Artist: Olivia MacKinnon, Ballerina with NYCB

Olivia MacKinnon was born in Mobile Alabama and is a ballerina with the New York City Ballet (NYCB). At the age of 17, she joined NYCB and has toured around the world including Denmark, France, Japan, China, Greece, West Indies, and various cities in the United States. As a professional ballerina and choreographer, she has created works for New York City Fashion Week and the House of Doyenne. Olivia is the founder of Ballet Inspired Fitness, she teaches both ballet and fitness classes for students all over the world. Olivia was featured in John Wick Parabellum film, and has had appearances in several documentaries. She has worked with numerous well known companies and artists such as Elle Decor, Museum of Modern Art, Puma, Rebecca Minkoff, Sarah Jessica Parker and Tiffany and Co.

Paul Taylor established Taylor 2 Dance Company in 1993 to ensure that his works could be seen by audiences all over the world regardless of economic considerations and the logistical limitations of non-traditional venues.  He worked with longtime colleague Linda Hodes to create a company that could accommodate performance requests, teach classes, and provide community outreach.  With six dancers, Taylor 2 is the same size as Mr. Taylor’s original Company.  In selecting repertoire for Taylor 2, Mr. Taylor chose dances that reveal the broad spectrum of his work, sometimes reworking the original version to fit the smaller ensemble.  Taylor 2’s engagements are flexible and are customized to meet the needs of each community.  They often consist of master classes and lecture/demonstrations in addition to performances that often take place in non-traditional venues as well as in theaters.

Orchestra of St. Luke’s was formed in 1979 when St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble, founded in 1974, expanded to perform orchestral works at Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, where OSL remains as the center’s summer orchestra-in-residence today. Each season, the Orchestra performs at New York’s major concert venues, playing a wide range of musical styles and genres and collaborating with artists ranging from Renée Fleming and Joshua Bell to Bono and Metallica. The Orchestra has participated in 118 recordings, four of which have won Grammy Awards, has commissioned more than 50 new works, and has given more than 175 world, U.S., and New York City premieres. In September 2018, the world-renowned conductor of Baroque and Classical repertoire Bernard Labadie joined OSL as Principal Conductor, continuing the Orchestra’s long tradition of working with champions of historical performance practice.

    For his newest work, Resident Choreographer Justin Peck will create a dance to a commissioned score by acclaimed American composer Nico Muhly. Preceding Peck’s world premiere is Jerome Robbins’ buoyantly charming In G Major, featuring scenery and costumes by the Art Deco artist Erté. Completing the program is Christopher Wheeldon’s DGV: Danse à Grande Vitesse, a fleet and intricate dance for a cast of more than 25 performed to a minimalist score by Michael Nyman, composed in honor of a new addition to the high-speed French train service known as the TGV.

    Uniting for the first time, Resident Choreographer Justin Peck will collaborate with contemporary composer Nico Muhly, who will contribute a commissioned score for Peck’s sole premiere in 19-20.

    Set to a supercharged, minimalist score, DGV: Danse à Grande Vitesse propels 26 dancers in sleek costumes through surging, relentless movement in front of a structural metallic background.

    Meet the Dancer
    Experience ballet from the other side of the footlights. A NYCB dancer will immerse your group in the life of a Company member during this 45-minute discussion and backstage tour, sharing insights into the life of a dancer and providing background for the performance your group is attending. You’ll hear interesting moments from the history of both NYCB and our home, the David H. Koch Theater, and have the opportunity to experience the breathtaking view of the auditorium from onstage. Participants must be at least 10 years old.

She is the recipient of a Princess Grace Fellowship Award for excellence in dance.
